The Budget - Is it Positive or Negative?

Aug 05, 2021

In a previous post, I talked about Spending and Saving. We've got a positive and negative narrative about each. In my experience, we have another negative narrative when it comes to the budget.

So many people (I'd say a majority) think doing/having a budget in theory is positive because most of us know budgeting helps us manage money better, but overall, they feel it's a negative thing because it's a "kill joy", a "straightjacket", is no fun, and limits us from doing what we want to do. I can't tell you how many people I've had conversations with that tell me something like "I don't use a budget because I want to have a life".

What if I told you money and budgeting can be fun, enjoyable, and positive? Sounds like a fairy tale, right? Here, I give us a great way we can turn that negative into a positive and view the budget as a good thing. It's all about perspective in my eyes. Instead of looking at the budget with the idea that you can't do anything fun, why not look at the budget as something that gives you permission to spend on the things that are important to you? This is easier than you think if you control the budget instead of the budget controlling you. The budget will listen to YOU if you set it up that way.
